Volkswagen is now testing an autonomous driving prototype called ‘Gen.Urban’ on public roads. With this robo-car, the Innovation Group wants to find out how the autonomous vehicle drives in public traffic and how people react to it. In principle, the vehicle can drive autonomously at level four, which in plain language means that it can theoretically drive without a human pilot. Gen.Urban has neither steering wheel nor pedals and the fallback to the safety driver is realised to the HMI “micro-wheel” and “Wiske”. All steering and braking elements are components of the joysteer 3.0 system. Road approval was achieved with a Delta homologation.
